Tom Rosenbauer has been a fly fisher for nearly five decades, and was tying flies commercially at age fourteen. He is the author of numerous books, as well as countless articles for American Angler, Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, Fly Fisherman, Fly Rod & Reel, Audubon, and other periodicals. He is a marketing manager at the Orvis Company in Manchester, Vermont, and is the host of the popular podcast The Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide Podcast, which has well over 10 million downloads to date. He is also the host of the TV show The Orvis Guide to Fly Fishing and is a guest host on The new Fly Fisher TV show.

Tom was named Fly Rod & Reel Magazine's Angler of the Year for 2011 and is known for his easy, engaging style and humility. He is popular for taking the arcane language of fly fishing and turning it into commonsense, succinct lessons. He lives on a trout stream in southern Vermont but fishes throughout North America on a regular basis. He has been to a number of exotic locations from Kamchatka to Patagonia but is just as happy fishing for trout, bass, carp, and pike in the United States and Canada, enjoying the wealth of public waters available to us.

Tom does not write about it much, but he is a passionate and experienced saltwater fly rod angler. His favorites are bonefish, tarpon, striped bass, false albacore, and "any other member of the tuna family "from mackerel on up". He thinks permit are overrated.

Battered covered and smothered
The content of the book is not at issue, the condition of the book is. It looks like it had been dragged across the floor or used to prop up a fan or a dresser. It’s a tad embarrassing. This is considered “new”?

“Everything should be reduced to its simplest, but no simpler” -attributed to Albert Einstein
This little book by no means oversimplifies. It move along from topic to topic imparting knowledge without being mysterious and covering a comprehensive and thoughtful set of topics. The author defines his mission and beautifully executes the book.

I was mesmerized by all of the information this book provided and how simply the author explained everything. I highly recommend this for the beginner to fly fishing and would purchase it again.

Some sections of the book need upgrading and a lot of new fly fishing styles are missing such as Euro Nymphing.
And phrases in the book such as “holding the fish up for that Hero Shot” could be probably be changed to “YouTube Shot” to match what fishermen are now doing to the poor fish.
In general, this is a pretty good book to make somebody knowledgeable enough to try Fly Fishing.

First off, I really love the feel of the book from the size to the font to the style of the pages. I began fly fishing a year ago and only just read this book and I feel that this is a good handbook to keep on you and was a good read well worth the money. The drawings and pictures are top quality.

The only thing it could have done better is include how to use certain rigs. For example the dry dropper rig. I can't recall the book really telling you the best way to use it.

Overall it's a good book to read if your beginning fly fishing.

The best I have read thus far. Very informative and easy to understand. Helps when you start out in a sport which can seem complicated and full of buzz words.

This is a great book, although written for American Market it is exactly what I required but couldn't get. The chapters are each an individual teaching aid, so I can go to which ever chapter I need, not necessary to plough through book to find the bit you want. So thanks.

I would give this book a five star rating but it is so full of info and a rather large book, its hard to read in bed. LOL
If you want to know what, where, and how this my fellow fisher folk is the book to have in your Library.
Good clear pictures, easy to follow charts, well laid out. Before you buy any Fly Fishing equipment, get this book first.
